Ballasts - Lighting Ballasts transfer energy from your outlet to the light bulb in order to ignite it. Ballasts are a necessary safety measure in most lighting, regulating the voltage entering the light source from the power supply. Ballasts typically will be either magnetic or electronic. You must match the bulb to ballast wattage. Whichever type you buy, look for a good warranty of at least three years and buy from a reputable company who will stand behind what they sell. Our friendly experts can help you find the right product for your lighting project.
Magnetic Ballasts - Less expensive than electronic, but also less energy efficient, magnetic ballasts can be plugged into a standard 120 V outlet. They require an experienced professional to repair for safety.
Electronic or Digital Ballasts - These ballasts require higher wattage outlets of 240 V, but offer a more stable light with no flickering. These are more energy efficient as well, saving 40% wattage. They can also be programmable to get a variety of outputs depending on your needs. Digital ballasts will shut down when they detect a shortage but cannot be repaired, and will instead need to be replaced.
Incandescents - There are two types of incandescent lighting; standard and halogen. Both types of incandescent lighting are being slowly phased out by the Government in favor of higher efficiency lighting. Incandescents produces a warm, flattering light for a great price and can often be found in retail shops. Despite their low up front purchase price, energy usage is poor at around 5%. Incandescent lights have a CRI (Color Rendering Index) of 100, which can be harsh and take the reds out of the lit area, producing a bright white glow and a pale, sickly look to people's faces.
Fluorescents - Fluorescent lighting is the energy efficient alternative to Incandescents and is often the standard classroom and office lighting, especially in states concerned with reducing energy consumption. Fluorescents are 4x more efficient than incandescents. Fluorescent lights usually last 10 to 20 times longer than an incandescent and therefore make up for their higher up front purchase price. Fluorescent lighting comes in a wide range of color rendering ratings (CRI- color Rendering Index) and color temperatures. Fluorescent lights can come in a CRI from 50-98, with more reds which can bring out the pinks in skin tones for a healthier look.
HID - High Intensity Discharge (HID) bulbs are good for large areas. HID bulbs can offer a highly efficient, long lasting lighting solution for your business. HID bulbs are often used in warehouses, retail stores, parking lots, indoor gardening, and utility corporate or industrial areas.
LED - Light Emitting Diodes (LED) are a high efficiency, durable and have an extremely long life. LED lighting is the most energy efficient and longest lasting type of light on the market today. LED lights can save up to .50 cents per day, per bulb, and won't need to be replaced for many years. The technology in these lights has come a long way, giving them a wide range of color temperatures from warm oranges and yellows to cool blues and whites. There's a color for all needs, whether you want to find the right color to flatter your display or replicate the healthy glow of an incandescent on customer's faces.
